This is Important to Me!
Mamie Eisenhower: First Ladies' Lives

Time Required: One class period


Introduction:

For many years, men have given their fiancées rings to symbolize their future together.  When Ike and Mamie became engaged, he gave her a miniature copy of his West Point class ring, telling her that the Army and his country would always come first and that she was second.  Mamie understood this and accepted it.  And this was the story of their marriage.

Objectives:

The purpose of this lesson is for students to explore their own beliefs about what is important and to illustrate it.   

Materials Required:

Art supplies.

Procedures:

1.  Ask students to think about something that is very important to them, something that they could dedicate their lives to. 

2.  Distribute the art supplies and ask them to draw a representation of this that could be made into a small piece of jewelry such as a ring or pendant. 

3.  Then have students write a short paragraph explaining their illustration.

Extending the Lesson:

If students wish, they may share their “jewelry” with their classmates.
