Mamie Eisenhower: First Ladies' Lives

Skill: Middle School
Time Required: One class period

Introduction:

The mottos of the four branches of the military and of the Coast Guard stress the values of each of the services.  Ike lived by the Army’s motto and expected Mamie to understand.

Objectives:

The purpose of this lesson is to acquaint students with the mottos of our armed services and the Coast Guard and to have them explore their own values to identify and create a motto for themselves.

Materials Required:

Access to the Internet; access to print reference materials; art supplies.

Procedures:

1.  Ask students if they know the official mottos of the various branches of service in the United States.  Be sure to include the Coast Guard.

2.  Write them on the board as students find them on line.  Ask students what the mottos mean when applied to that branch of service.

3.  Their task is to identify and create a motto for themselves.  They will then write a short paragraph and/or draw a representation of their personal motto.

Extending the Lesson:

This lesson could be extended by creating a "Gallery" of student mottos, insignia, etc.
