Introduction:

During the 1940s, the Little Golden Books provided an inexpensive way for parents to give their children attractive, colorful books.  These often provided the “bedtime story” in many households.  Perhaps Mamie read these to her grandchildren.

Objectives:

The purpose of this lesson is to acquaint (or perhaps remind) students of the wealth of good reading available to entertain, enlighten, and transport.    

Materials Required:

Access to the Internet; art supplies.

Procedures:

1.  Ask students if they are familiar with the Little Golden Books.  If so, have them share their favorite stories. 

2.  If not, show several examples.  Read one to the students that they may not be familiar with or perhaps an “old” favorite. 

3.  Then, divide the class into groups and ask them to create their own Little Golden Book, story and pictures, to share with students in a lower grade level.

Extending the Lesson:
