How Old is Mickey Mouse? THAT OLD???!

How Old is Mickey Mouse? THAT OLD???!
Pat Nixon: Economics, Discovery and Daily Life

Skill: Elementary School
Time Required: One to two class periods

Introduction:

Mickey Mouse turned 40 in 1968, when Richard Nixon was elected to the Presidency.  He'd already had a grand and glorious career and there was more to come.  If Mickey was 40 in 1968, how old is he now?

Objectives:

Students who participate in this activity will learn about the history of Mickey Mouse and gain some experience in creating a Timeline.

Materials Required:

Access to the Internet; access to print materials about Mickey Mouse and his friends.

Procedures:

1.  Ask students if they know how old Mickey Mouse is.  Take guesses and write them on the board.

2.  Using the website listed below, encourage students to explore the site, taking notes on milestones in Mickey's career.

3.  When research is completed, students should create a Timeline of Mickey's career, illustrated with drawings (or downloads, if you prefer) of Mickey's changing "look."

4.  At the end of the Timeline should be Mickey's current age.

Extending the Lesson:

This lesson could be extended by including in the Timeline events and pictures of Mickey's friends--Minnie Mouse, Donald Duck, Hewey, Dewey, and Louie, Goofey, etc.
